I began making my own drawing surfaces out of surface bonding cement in the early nineties. The original idea was to create the drawing surface first, there by beginning the determination of what would follow on that surface. I have used a wide variety of materials including dry pigments, powdered metals, bits of tire, pottery shards, and iron as well as more traditional drawing materials.

This is a random search of symbols, owing as much to early cave art as it does to the abstract expressionists. It is fast and exploratory approach which for me is a needed counterpoint to the creation of my large sculptures.
